Background and general approach

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. By knowing the longitude and latitude can be determined Coordinates of the points.

Structure

The GPS consists three segments: 1- Space Segment 2- Control Segment 3- User Segment. The workshop was about the adjustment and usage of User Segment in GPS devices. The type of Explained device was “FURUNO GPS Navigator GP-80” by The NMEA protocol number 183.715. Made in Japan.

Principles of operation

The workshop was held in two parts: theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part we talked about the geographical coordinates. the parallel lines of the equator, the Earth was divided into north and south And also parallel lines of the UTC was divided earth into East and West. Therefore GPS can calculate position (longitude and latitude). the position gives us 3 types data: (1)main information (DMG[1],SMG[2],CMG[3]), (2)Information by entering way point(DTG[4],ETA[5],CTG[6]-,XTE[7]), (3)safety information’s (MOB[8], Arrival alarm, Anchor alarm, XTE alarm).

In the practical classes, we talked about the GPS components: (Power Supply, Display, cable plug, Antenna Active, NMEA…). Then the GPS system and its configuration were set up. The device, displayed the coordinates 35®/43.284’N, 51®/25.307’E (The position of the laboratory). Then Instructor talked about GPS active antenna, and we learned how to troubleshoot it.  The GPS device’s display types were studied and we learned how to enter waypoints. Use MOB Button for search and rescue, were taught by Instructor and was explained the DOP specifications of each satellite.

At the end of workshop NMEA communication protocol was used to test the GPS performance. For this test used computer serial cable and HyperTerminal software.
